After 20 years, it seems like there´s a "nuclear renaissance" buzz.

Before Chernobyl

1957:  fire at one of the reactor producing plutonium at Windscale

1979: The partial meltdown at one of the reactors in Pennsylvenia (the Three Mile Island Generation Station).

Fünf Grüne gegen Atomkraft- cinque motivi per bocciare l´atomica

In other words: tons of radioactive debris must be stored and secured from terrorists.

Nach Angaben der Atomenergiebehörde (I.A.E.A.)

  • 443 Atomkraftwerke weltweit von 369 Gigawatt in Betrieb
  • 24 Atomkraftwerke in Bau oder Planung
  • 104 Atomkraftwerke in den USA
  • 59 in Frankreich
  • 56 in Japan
  • 31 in Russland
  • 23 in Großbritannien
  • 20 in Südkorea
  • 18 in Kanada
  • 17 in Deutschland
  • 15 in indien

The explosion of the fourth reactor occured before dawn, April 26. 1986. Thirty people died immediately, in the blast and fire.

The sarcophagus, also called shelter, was bulit in six months and it was planned to last at most 20 years. Today, it is a decaying concrete-and-steel crypt. There is enough enriched uranium and plutonium in the hulk for dozens of atomic bombs. This haunting monument will now be dismantled. After 10 years of complicated negotiations, a new plant, NSC (Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant) will be built. It will be longer than a football filed and taller than the Statue of Liberty, costing $ 800 million. It will be the largest moveable structure ever built: for safety, it will be built at a distance from the sarcophagus and then slid into place.

After the incident, many workers and firemen risked their health by razing contaminated houses near the destroyed reactor. During the day after the explosion, thousands of workers called liquidators were rushed to Chernobyl to tame the radioactive inferno. Many men absorbed a life-time radiation dose in seconds. The gravity of the incident was understimated by governments and officials: children started taking iodine pills weeks after the explosion and drank milk from cows who had gazed on contaminated grass. The result was a sharp rise in childhood tyrhoid cancer. Those who survived must spend a life-time on medication.

Many children and adults suffer from tyrohid cancer; many are the cases of leukemia and other radiation-induced cancers. People throughout the country continue to blame a wide variety of ills on Chernobyl. The psychological effects of Chernobyl are even more dramatic: mothers think their new borned children are mentally or physically ill; the rate of deadly health risks such as depression and alcoholism is high.

"Children born in the region are said to have a higher rate of birth defects and radiation because of Chernobyl, a belief not supported by a recent UN study.

Amerika gegen Iran (Quelle: Die Zeit, Nr.16)

Are we at the beginning of another bloody strategy of the USA? This time there is no antrax, but the ghost of the atomic bomb and of WMD. Do you want to read more? Here´s the voice of an expert: http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060417fa_fact
